On July 1, 2003, the FCC  approved a request by NOAA to authorized the use of personal locator beacons.  NOAA operates a series of satellites that detect and locate aviators, mariners - and now land-based users in distress.  It has  given the green light to a significant public safety benefit for the millions of people in the United States who explore the nation’s wilderness every year, and opens the potential for saving many more lives.
When an aircraft, ship, or person is in distress, the emergency beacon is activated manually. The beacon transmits latitude and longitude coordinates through its built-in GPS receiver to the satellites.  The signal is then forwarded to Mission Control Center where it is combined with position and registration information and passed to search and rescue authorities at the nearest rescue coordination center.

In the United States,  rescue centers are operated by the U.S. Coast Guard for incidents at sea, and by the U.S. Air Force for incidents on land.  These departments use planes, helicopters, ships, boats, search parties and sometimes commercial ships to find the persons in distress and bring them to safety.
This system operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The McMurdo Fastfind Plus is a compact Personal Location Beacon that features a built in GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver combined with  406 MHz and 121.5 MHz transmitters.   Similar in size to a mobile phone, it is powerful enough to transmit a distress message from almost anywhere in the world to the international search and rescue services in just 3 minutes,  giving positional accuracy to within 33 yards.
  • Global alert via NOAA Cospas Sarsat satellites
  • 406 transmitter and 121.5 homing frequency
  • Alert time to rescue services 3 minutes
  • Positional accuracy to within typically 33 yards
  • Positional updates every 20 minutes
  • Visual indicator and audible alarm indates activated operating status confirming 406MHz, 121.5MHz and GPS transmissions
  • Batteries last for five years; activated, operate for 24 hours.
  • Easy to operate, compact and stylish
  • Complete with designer carry case and clever fixing device for attaching PLB to clothing or lifejacket
